Why we shoot Old San Juan.

Five centuries of architecture, the bluest cobblestones in the Caribbean, and a light that angles differently on every block. Old San Juan is the most photographed square mile in Puerto Rico — and still the easiest place to get a portrait that feels unlike anyone else's.

01The light moves through the old walls fast. The colors on Calle de la Luna at 6:45am are not the colors at 7:15am. We plan the route block by block.
02No permit required for handheld photography outside El Morro and La Fortaleza grounds — meaning we can shoot six scenes in 60 minutes without paperwork.
03Real food, real coffee, real moments built into the session. The best candid we ever got was mid-bite at a café on Calle del Cristo.

Best time

Sunrise (6:00–7:30 am) for empty streets

Sunrise (6:00–7:30am). The streets are empty, the cats are out, and the light on the pastel façades is soft rather than harsh. Sunset works but comes with cruise-ship crowds. We can also shoot on overcast afternoons — the walls look cinematic in flat light.

Logistics & permits

No permit required for photography outside El Morro & La Fortaleza grounds

Meet at Plaza Colón. Park in Doña Fela lot ($10/day) or metered street parking (free before 8am). We walk a 0.6-mile route at a relaxed pace — wear comfortable shoes, bring water, the cobblestones are gorgeous and unforgiving.

What to wear

Ivory, cream, soft terracotta, deep burgundy, navy, sage. Avoid neon and bright white — both fight the blue cobblestones. Long dresses look phenomenal in this setting; crop tops get lost in the architecture.
