Why we shoot El Yunque.

The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, 30 minutes from Old San Juan and a world away. Waterfalls, moss-covered boulders, 180-foot trees, and the kind of green that registers as a different color palette from the rest of the island.

02Three distinct ecosystems inside 45 minutes: dense jungle at La Mina, waterfall pools at Juan Diego, and the cloud forest ridge at Yokahú Tower.

Best time

Early morning (7:00–10:00 am) before afternoon showers

Early morning, 7:00–10:00am. Afternoon showers are frequent (it is, after all, a rainforest) — starting early buys us dry trails and filtered morning light. On overcast days the color saturation is actually better than in direct sun.

Recreation pass required ($2/person, book online at recreation.gov up to 30 days out — we send you the link with your booking confirmation). Meet at the Main Visitor Center. Trails range from paved (La Mina) to moderately rocky (Juan Diego); we match the trail to what you're wearing.

What to wear

Deep greens, terracottas, mustard, rust, ivory. Flowy dresses are stunning here but require sturdy sandals underneath. Avoid anything that will absorb water on the rocks — you will get damp, that's the whole point.
